At Harbourside, we’re privileged to support people through every stage of life’s journey. Bev’s story is a beautiful reflection of what that can look like – a life shaped by resilience, connection, and community.
Born in Cronulla as one of seven children, Bev raised four children and, after being widowed in 1979, dedicated herself to bringing people together. She founded the Port Stephens Friendship Group, now celebrating its 30th anniversary, along with the Port Stephens Ballroom Dance Group and the Walking for Pleasure Group, which grew to more than 130 members — all inspired by her belief that “we are happiest in the herd.”
Bev joined the Harbourside community in 2016, moving into our Shoal Bay Retirement Village. She quickly became a valued neighbour – sweeping paths, tending gardens, and lending a hand wherever she could. In 2024, she was recognised with the Eminent Resident Award, nominated by fellow residents who admired her generosity and spirit.
As her needs changed, Bev began receiving support from Harbourside Home Care. With regular assistance and the reassurance of familiar faces, she was able to continue living independently, staying connected to the community she loved.
She also became a regular at the Seniors Hub, enjoying outings, gardening projects and social activities.
Staff member Jason recalls:
“Bev was a fantastic person to have in our Seniors Hub. She always had a good story and an amazing smile, and she made new people feel welcome. Even when she was in respite care, she still attended the Hub – which really helped with her transition.”
Her family also remembers the strong relationships she built along the way.
“If Mum could have adopted Jason, she would have!” her daughter Debra laughs.
In 2025, following a fall and with increasing challenges from dementia, Bev moved into residential care at Harbourside. While it was a significant change, her family found comfort in knowing she remained within the same familiar community – surrounded by people who already knew her.
Today, Bev is settled and well supported, with staff focused on her comfort, wellbeing and quality of life.
Reflecting on her mother’s journey, Debra shared:
“Being part of Harbourside at every stage has given Mum security and belonging. From Retirement Living, to Home Care, and now Residential Care, we’ve always felt she was in the right place.”
Bev’s story is a reminder that with the right support, people can continue to feel connected, safe and cared for – even as their needs change.
At Harbourside, we’re here to walk alongside people and their families at every stage, helping them stay connected to the community they know and trust.
