When Jenny started as a Personal Care Assistant at Harbourside two years ago, she brought with her nearly three decades of experience in aged care. But even with all those years behind her, she says Harbourside has been the most supportive workplace she’s ever had.
“I came to the bay looking for a career path all those years ago, and I sort of fell into aged care,” Jenny says. “But Harbourside is on another level — so professional, always on top of training and upskilling. I only wish I had joined years earlier.”
A Typical Day in Jenny’s Role
Jenny starts her day at 6am, caring for people with a wide range of needs, including high-level quadriplegic care.
“There’s such variety — everything from basic nursing care to domestic assistance and even taking people out,” she says. “It’s never about scrubbing floors all day. The variety is what makes it a good job.”
What She Loves Most
For Jenny, it’s the training and support that stand out.
“Harbourside really invests in its people. The training makes me feel competent and confident in my role,” she says. “And every client is just lovely — there isn’t a single person I don’t look forward to seeing. The passion for caring really filters through the whole team.”
One moment that sticks in her mind was helping a client who was struggling with his TV.
“I couldn’t fix it myself, so I got someone to come out and sort it straight away,” she says. “The client wrote to the office to thank me and said I was like ‘a dog with a bone’ — determined to make sure everything was sorted for him. It was such a nice feeling to know he appreciated it.”
The Team Behind the Care
Jenny can’t speak highly enough of her colleagues.
“The team support is amazing. There’s such a high calibre of people here — really competent, really caring. It’s a well-oiled machine, and you always feel embraced and supported.”
That support extends to professional growth, too. Harbourside provides regular training so staff can keep learning and feel confident in their skills.
Why She Recommends Working at Harbourside
Jenny’s passion for the job comes through when she talks about what she loves most.
“It’s about doing the best you can for people — especially at the end of life. Making them comfortable, providing respite, supporting their mental health. It’s rewarding work.”
Her advice to anyone thinking about joining the team?
“Definitely get on board. I tell people I’ve worked with before to come to Harbourside — you won’t regret it. It’s a really good career path with really good people.”
