As we get older, most of us want to stay living in our own homes for as long as possible. But sometimes we need a bit of extra help to make that happen — whether it’s with the groceries, the garden, or just getting to appointments.
At Harbourside Port Stephens, we support locals to stay independent, comfortable, and connected to the community they love. If you or someone you care about is starting to struggle at home, this guide will help you understand what support is available and where to begin.
What is a Home Care Package?
A Home Care Package is a government-subsidised program designed to help older Australians get the care and support they need at home. Rather than moving into aged care, you can access services like:
- Help with cleaning, cooking, and shopping
- Personal care (like showering or dressing)
- Transport to appointments or the shops
- Support with medication
- Social activities and companionship
- Allied health services (like physio or podiatry)
- Clinical care from registered nurses (such as wound care, health monitoring and chronic condition support)
At Harbourside, we’re proud to offer clinical care services delivered by qualified nurses — an essential level of care that many other home care providers don’t offer.
You can choose a local provider (like us!) to coordinate these services in a way that suits your lifestyle and goals.
Is It Time to Look Into Support?
Here are a few signs it might be worth exploring home care options:
- Day-to-day tasks are getting harder
- There’s been a recent fall, illness, or hospital visit
- You’re feeling isolated or lonely
- A loved one is spending more time helping you
- You’re worried about safety or managing at home
Whether you need a little help once a week or more regular support, there’s something available to match your needs.
Where Do I Start?
The first step is getting in touch with My Aged Care, the Australian Government’s starting point for aged care services.
You can call them on 1800 200 422 or visit www.myagedcare.gov.au. They’ll ask a few questions and then organise an assessment to see what level of support you’re eligible for.
💡 Tip: If you’re feeling unsure or overwhelmed, we’re happy to help. Harbourside Port Stephens can guide you through the process, explain your options, and even help you prepare for your assessment.
📍 Come chat to us in person:
We’ll be at Salamander Square on Thursday 8th May and Thursday 12th June with a pop-up information stall to answer your questions and help with applications for home care services. No appointments needed — just drop in and say hello!
Why Stay Local?
Choosing a local provider like Harbourside means you’re getting more than just care services — you’re getting a team that knows the Port Stephens community. We’re based here, our staff live locally, and we take the time to get to know every client personally.
We’ll work with you (and your family) to create a care plan that fits your needs and preferences, now and into the future. And if your needs change, we adapt with you.
